1. Caribbean

The Caribbean is the world’s busiest cruise region, with sailings year-round. The dry season from December to April brings sunshine, calm seas and the highest demand, especially around Christmas, New Year and US school holidays.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking around August to October. Cruise lines change routes to avoid storms, which means a port you wanted may be swapped. Fares are often lowest in this period. If you travel then, buy travel insurance that covers itinerary changes and missed departures.

2. Alaska

Alaska’s cruise season runs roughly from May to September. June, July and August offer the warmest weather, longest days and the best chance of wildlife sightings. May and September are cheaper and quieter but cooler and wetter. A balcony cabin is especially worthwhile here for glacier viewing.

3. Mediterranean

The Mediterranean season runs mainly from April to November. The sweet spots are May–June and September–October: warm enough to swim, with fewer crowds than mid-summer. July and August are hot, busy and expensive in popular ports such as Santorini, Dubrovnik and Barcelona.

4. Northern Europe, the Baltic and Norway

Cruises to the Norwegian fjords, Iceland and the Baltic run mostly from May to September. Summer brings very long days, and in the far north the midnight sun. Some lines run winter Northern Lights cruises along the Norwegian coast, but these are a specialist, colder option.

5. Asia

Asia covers many climates, so timing depends on the route:

  • Southeast Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia): generally best from November to March, outside the main monsoon season.
  • Japan: spring (late March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the most pleasant. Read our guide to the best time to visit Japan.
  • Late summer and early autumn can bring typhoons in East Asia.

6. Australia and New Zealand

Seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. The main season is November to March, the Australian summer. Many ships reposition to Asia or elsewhere during the southern winter.

7. Arabian Gulf

Gulf cruises from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha run in the cooler months, mainly November to March. Summer temperatures are extremely high and few ships sail. Pair a cruise with a stay in the city; see our first-time guide to Dubai.

8. Repositioning cruises: the hidden bargain

Twice a year, ships move between regions, for example from the Caribbean to Europe in spring and back in autumn. These one-way repositioning cruises have many sea days and are often priced very low per night. They suit flexible travellers who enjoy life on board.

9. How to save on any route

  • Shoulder season: the weeks just before and after peak bring good weather and lower fares.
  • Book early or very late: early bookings get the best cabin choice; last-minute deals appear when ships are not full.
  • Avoid school holidays if you can.
  • Compare total cost, including tips, drinks and excursions. Our first-time cruise guide explains what is extra.
